Tuesday Tip: Guide to Pillows

There are a lot of elements to keep in mind when you’re adding pillows to your space and it can be overwhelming to get it right! We’ve put together some tried and true steps you can easily follow to get a cohesive, designer look in your own home!

Step One: Finalize a palette that compliments the other colors in your space! Are the surrounding colors bright and fun or are you wanting to tone things down with neutrals? Think about how the colors of the pillows will work with the color of your sofa and other elements around it (i.e. artwork, rugs, adjacent furniture, etc).

Step Two: Often times, we see people will fill their sofa/sectional with pillows that are too small or all the same sizes, or don’t add enough to fill the open area. The back pillow will set the tone for the rest of the pillows selected. Add a larger pillow in the back, either a 24” x 24” or 22” x 22” square that will fill the space then layer in smaller sizes from there. Our rule of thumb is each pillow should be 2” smaller than the one behind. The front pillow will be smaller to allow you to view all the pillows together and is usually a lumber size: a 12” x 24” , a 14” x 20”, or go with a small square around 20” x 20”.

Step Three: Look for patterns and textures that compliment each other. We recommend following this rule of 3: combine a solid/texture, a geometric design, and a floral/soft pattern together to create a varied, yet cohesive collection. Try to incorporate similar colors and tones to each side to make sure the pillows tie together.
