Q & A: Window Treatment Sources
We asked you to share what questions you had about all things Interior Design and boy did you guys deliver! We had SO many different types of questions roll in and we’re so excited to jump in and share what we know! After 6 years of Interior Design experience, both working in a large studio and starting a design business from scratch, we have a lot of tips that we can’t wait to help with. After all, sharing is caring!
This week we’re focusing on a question we got about how and where we like to source Window Treatments from. After so many years, we’ve accumulated a long list of vendors and favorite go-to’s that we like to use during our design process. We keep a lot of our sources close to the chest to ensure our clients are getting exclusive pieces incorporated into their designs but we’re happy to break a few rules to answer your questions.
Question |“Where do you like to shop for window treatments?”
There are so many little details that go into designing a home or space and deciding on window treatments can become overwhelming after all the decisions you’ve had to make already through the process. Often, those decisions are left to the end when they should be woven into the design as soon as possible. Our higher end homes usually require us to incorporate motorized shades and should be planned into the electrical process while other decisions we make might involve getting started during the window selection process to make sure we can use the specific shade we want. There are a wide variety of Window Treatment sources that we use depending on the budget and how customized we want to go. Here’s a few of our faves and pricepoints:
$$$-Custom Window Treatments
Local Custom Drapery Service: My go-to for window treatments is usually finding a local vendor near my project locations that are more customizable, making client projects feel more unique. They work with a variety of vendors with almost limitless options. If one of their options doesn’t quite work for the space, I’m able to source a fabric and have them custom make a window treatment with the fabric I find and in the specific way I need. They do all of the heavy lifting by measuring and installing, which I prefer so I can focus on the home install while they take care of the windows. Uptown Drapes is one of our favorites local to Utah but they also have an online store you can access anywhere!
The Shade Store: What’s great about this source is they have beautiful selections and a wide offering of various types of window treatments. However, their material selection has limits so you can only select from options they have available. They do offer Free Measurements in certain areas of the US or give step by step instructions for you to measure yourself. We love using them for our woven shades, fabric romans and drapery.
Restoration Hardware: They offer stock drapery alongside customized drapery. They have quite a few options when it comes to style of window treatment with a variety of pleat styles to choose from. They have a lot of fabric offerings and we love to use their hardware if we’re sourcing that product ourselves!
$$-Stocked Window Treatments
Pottery Barn: A great source for inexpensive roman shades with a variety of fabric designs. This may be a perfect option if you have a standard window that you want a quick and easy fix that still looks beautiful. They do offer drapery options in stocked sizing but can be hard to fit to certain spaces or window heights. While they have a variety of fabric to choose from, their drapery doesn’t have a pinch pleat design that you’ll see more often in higher-quality drapes.
Annie Selke: They recently started selling roller shade window treatments and I even used them in my own home. They only have certain stocked sizes to choose from so they’re not as customizable as some other options, but their offered sizes do fit most standard windows. I love the tones of their woven roller materials and they have worked perfect for us!
$- Semi-Custom Window Treatments
Select Blinds: A great source when you’re wanting to get a custom sized roller shade or roman on a tighter budget. They have a more limited selection and even fewer options that I would recommend, but you’re able to order samples of their offered fabrics to determine the quality and see in your space. Some good go-to’s from their line are their white linen roman and textured light filtering rollers.
Amazon Drapery: A surprising source for semi-custom, yet affordable drapery is found on Amazon believe it or not. There is quite the difference between a high-end custom drapery and the offerings here, but I’ve been impressed by their faux heavyweight linen fabric selections and the pinch-pleat design you usually don’t find with less expensive options.
